A song that hold hands fondly with this lyrical piece, listen with the reading, or soon after.
A collaborative lyrical piece, made with my daughters.
Words and photography by me / Art by them / Wearable art by our favourite True Artist
It’s been good for us…
…to find a sense of place on the floors of mountains, ones that silhouette and make shape of a sleeping giant laying gently on his back.
His eyes are to the sky, almost as though he is showing us how to be here.
To see a rooster crossing main roads with cars slow enough to stop.
To hold coffee in slower hands on mission-orange table-tops and be met on all kinds of days, by all kinds of company, with all sorts of things—that want and hope to be said.
To have a home on a hill with a long long driveway that welcomes both an entourage of cars to a table full of food, or the stillness and beauty a hill does offer—
It’s been good for us.
It’s been good to be found and followed by art and music, solitude and dancing, where town secrets are the beautiful and oddly kind…
… like where you can get a paper bag full of sugared ginger for $1.50 whilst being gifted hand drawn maps to secret roads where waterholes shaped like hearts can be discovered…
secrets from open hands that offer noticed findings when wild roadside flowers might fill enough vases for 10 tables, begging to make a trail of yellow and join the songs of people gathering where hearts fall out…
… open hands that tell stories of bravery where there’s a willingness to give good things a go. To pick up the music, the paintbrush or the keys to alleyways doors, because why not make a living from the things that you love…
…and to be held when it works,
held when it doesn’t.
It’s countless how many unintended prophecies have been spoken from the steps next door to our corner bookstore (the cornerstone of our town) from a man who has likely seen more pain than a heart could ever fathom. He shows up day after day, sun on his face, pain sown into his brow, telling passers by things that somehow happen to make all the sense —
like yesterday he told me my name should be “Petunia” not “Katherine” and that although I live in Scotland I should actually be living in Denmark or Spain—and even though more times than not, what he says could be written off as crazy—when I stop long enough to listen, it often doesn’t sound crazy at all.
To run into you,
and you,
and you,
on crossings and street corners,
in bookstores and alleyways,
at day and at sunset,
under moonlight and before dawn,
in the cinema with it’s leather bound seats,
or the art that gathers us by night,
the set-cream that often and eagerly makes us spend all our last pennies, pennies spent importantly partnering dessert wines with cream, under perfectly lit ceilings, way too late into the night,
or the rain that makes us check in on each other because it’s heavy sounds brings us both pain and beauty—
It’s been good for us,
It’s been good,
It’s
been
so
beautifully
good
for
us.
Have you read my most recent piece? It’s a long piece, (27 mins to be exact) so I suggest your reading moment be accompanied with vino or tea…
Sometimes we are given the opportunity to make a brave choice. A choice to surrender the things that have been great, in exchange for greater. It's here a soulful, lively, boom-boom, heart-out-of-chest, tears-on-cheeks,"I'm alive" kind of passion lives. It lives just around the corner from surrenders bend.
In 2022, I began to ask myself some questions…
Could I cultivate my livelihood from an unhurried posture at the table?
What is the art asking of me?
Could I write for a living and stay true to the size of my nervous system?
Could I start from scratch and make an income again?
And the most vulnerable question of all…
Could I become a full time paid writer?
The answer from where I stand now is “yes!”, “yes I can”
and I wrote all about it here…
