Guilt won’t write our way to nobility,

as we lay

in

our

safe

warm

beds—

It’s our tears that soak the script,

ink bleeding

into the shoes 

of others.

Our tears

are 

becoming.

Becoming as gentle rain

be it

a lyric,

or a dance,

we are stretching out—

opening,

hurting,

leaning in,

listening—

believing again,

humbled,

holding.

And I’m grateful

for much

and choosing to find a reason for it

everywhere I can—

today I thought,

how grateful am I

to love them this much,

that I am able to miss them,

this 

much. 

I’ve never held his hand the way I am holding it these days

feeling every part of his skin,

because we are here,

in the immediate. 

And although I have always known 

the immediate is all we ever really had 

my heart was becoming sick

with the disappointment of putting 

too 

much 

hope

into longer views. 

So my hope is here. 

in my breath. 

Just here,

right now. 

Eternally. 

Inhale,

exhale, 

I am here,

I am alive.
